Yukon teachers at orientation sessionLearn on this page how to apply for substitute work in Yukon schools at all grade levels, K through 12. Find information here about qualifications and pay categories.

Apply online on the Apply to Education system

Substitute teacher and substitute personnel applications are now processed through the online Apply to Education system. We have prepared instructions  to help you apply.

Criminal record check

A criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Search is a condition of employment that must be filled prior to starting work. Please report to your local police detachment to have this check done. Be sure to take two pieces of identification with you.

Once the check has been completed, you must pick up the form from the police and bring the original to Human Resources. At that point you will be advised of your eligibility to work in Yukon schools.

A criminal record check is valid for two years from the date that the police verify the search. You are expected to maintain this condition of employment, even if your current criminal record check expires in the middle of a school year.

Reapply each year

All substitute personnel jobs conclude at the end of each school year. You must reapply each year to be put on the substitute personnel list.

Qualifications and rates of pay

Please note that a full day will show as 5.00 hours on pay advice forms, as substitute personnel are paid by the day, not the hour.

Category 1

If you do not have a teaching certificate or a Bachelor’s degree, you may still apply to work in classrooms as substitute personnel. The basic pay rate is $135.93 per day as a Category 1 substitute.

Category 2

If you hold a Bachelor’s degree, you may qualify as a Category 2 substitute and earn $167.52 per day. You will have to provide a copy of your transcripts showing the degree has been conferred. Your Category 2 rate takes effect on the date we receive your transcripts. A Category 1 pay rate applies until the day we receive your transcripts. The rate is not retroactive to your first day of work.

Category 3

Certified teachers are referred to as Category 3 substitute teachers and earn $218.43 per day. To qualify, please upload one of the following to your profile

  • a copy of your valid Yukon Teaching Certificate or
  • a valid teaching certificate from another Canadian jurisdiction or
  • a letter of eligibility for a teaching certificate anywhere in Canada, along with your transcripts.

Your Category 3 rate of pay takes effect on the date we receive all of these documents. A Category 1 pay rate applies until the day we receive your documentation. The rate is not retroactive to your first day of work.
