STEP information for employers

Employers who have been awarded STEP subsidies can now download a fillable STEP Claim Form .

Yukon employers can apply for wage subsidies to hire post-secondary students for summer jobs in career-related fields of study.

The subsidy is $7.20 per hour, for 450 to 600 hours of employment.

Employers agree to pay their STEP workers according to the STEP wage scale, which is indexed to the Treasury Board of Canada's pay scale for post-secondary students. Non-Yukon Government employers may opt to pay higher wages.


You can apply for a STEP wage subsidy if you are a:

  • Non-government organization or agency
  • First Nation
  • Municipal government
  • Private sector employer


  • You are legally entitled to operate a business in Yukon
  • Have an office in Yukon with a local contact person.
  • Have been operating in Yukon for at least one year

Eligible jobs or employment opportunities must:

  • Relate to a student’s field of study, demonstrate career-related training, and benefit the student’s future employability
  • Guarantee at least 450 hours of work
  • Provide at least 37.5 hours of work per week
  • Start no earlier than May 1 and end no later than September 1
  • Pay according to the STEP pay scale (listed in the STEP Guidelines)

Application process

To apply for a STEP wage subsidy:

  1. Download the Non-Yukon Government Employer STEP Application  and Guidelines . Government of Yukon departments must use the Yukon Government STEP Application Note: Yukon government forms are designed to be read using Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer)and Adobe Reader. If you use another browser/software the forms may not display properly or you may not be able to save and send the document electronically.
  2. Read the guidelines carefully.
  3. Submit the completed application by the closing date of November 4, 2016, to:

We will post approved STEP positions on the STEP Information for Students web pages. We will send you the resumes and applications of eligible students who apply. It is your responsibility to conduct interviews and handle job offers.
