The scholarships listed below are provided by various organizations throughout Yukon.

In addition to these scholarships, various community groups, religious organizations, First Nations, financial institutions and businesses may also have funding options worth exploring. Your high school counselor or an advisor at your institution may have more information as well. Searching the internet can be useful, too. Research as many options as you can to get a good idea of what’s available and when and how to apply.

When applying for any of the scholarships below, please do not send your applications to the Student Financial Assistance Office unless requested to do so.

Association of Yukon Communities scholarships in municipal studies

The Association of Yukon Communities will provide two annual scholarships in the amount of $500.00 each for Yukon students studying toward a career in municipal government. Other eligible candidates are municipal staff and elected officials who are currently working for a municipality or local advisory council. Applications will be accepted from Yukoners who are students of post-secondary institutions or are municipal employees or elected officials of local governments who are taking a course of study toward a career in municipal government and management.

Applications will be received between August 15 and September 30 each year. Preference will be given to those who have not received other financial assistance.

Canadian Army Yukon Scholarship

Award amount

$100.00 annually

Criteria

  • Grade 12 student from Yukon entering first year of post-secondary
  • Minimum Grade 12 average of 60%
  • Accepted into an eligible institution

Elizabeth Bentley Order Of The Eastern Star Scholarship Award

Member of the Order, or wife, husband, father, mother, sister, brother, child, step-child or grandchild of a member of a Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in British Columbia/Yukon

Applicants attending any degree-granting university recognized by the Canadian Universities Foundation, and where applicants derive their education beyond the limits of the universities recognized by the Canadian Universities Foundation, such as the B.C. Institute of Technology and the Vancouver Schools of Arts acceptable to the University of British Columbia, and having completed at least two years or equivalent of regular courses, and with the highest average in all subjects taken in the two previous (not necessarily consecutive) scholastic years, are entitled to receive the same. Need and difficulty of the course are factors that may be taken into consideration.

Engineers Yukon Education Award

Two awards for Yukon resident students who are pursuing post-secondary education in the field of engineering, entering into the second, third or fourth year (or fifth year if enrolled in a five-year program) of a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board approved university engineering program. One award is reserved for a student who is Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) and/or female.

In memory of Joyce McLachlan, a scholarship for Yukon graduates participating in post-secondary studies, in any field, to further their education in a certificate, diploma, under-graduate degree, trades in-school training or masters. Scholarship will be awarded based on volunteer service and community involvement.

French First Language Summer Bursary - Destination Clic

Administered by the Council of Ministers of Education (Canada)

This program enables 14- and 15-year-old Francophone students studying in a French-first-language school to take a three-week course in French First Language. The bursary is paid directly to the institution and covers costs of tuition, instructional materials, room and board, and compulsory activities. Half of the student’s transportation costs are reimbursed by the institution at the end of the course. Optional expenses are the student’s own responsibility.

Students are accepted at all levels of language competence. All programs include socio-cultural activities as well as classroom instruction. These programs are offered at the following Canadian institutions:

  • École d’immersion française, Université Western (in Rimouski)
  • Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières
  • Université de Moncton
  • Université d’Ottawa

French Immersion Work Experience Program -  Odyssey

Administered by the Council of Ministers of Education (Canada)

The Odyssey program is an opportunity for Yukoners to work as paid English-language assistants in French-language schools in New Brunswick and Quebec. This nine-month program offers an immersion experience in French-speaking Canada, while  helping teachers with the oral and cultural aspects of a second language.  Every year, French-speaking “monitors” come to Yukon through the Odyssey program to work with students in our French Second Language Classrooms.

French Post-Secondary Fellowship Bursary

Administered by the Yukon Department of Education's French Programs unit and funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

This bursary aims to encourage Canadians to study at the post-secondary level in French to acquire knowledge of their second official language or, in the case of French speaking students, their own language. Application forms and additional information are available at:

French Second Language Summer Bursary - Explore

Administered by the Council of Ministers of Education (Canada)

The Explore program enables students from Grade 11 to post-secondary levels to take a five-week immersion course in their second official language. The bursary is paid directly to the institution and covers costs of tuition, instructional materials, room and board, and compulsory activities. Part of the student's transportation costs are reimbursed by the Yukon Department of Education's French Programs Unit ad the end of the course.The student’s transportation costs and optional expenses are his/her own responsibility.

Students are accepted at all levels of language competence. Programs are offered at institutions all across Canada. All programs include socio-cultural activities as well as classroom instruction.

George Darbyshire Award for Community Service & Conservation Ethics

This is a cash award of up to $500 to a Grade 12 student in Yukon who has demonstrated an interest and commitment to community service and conservation ethics, in particular those demonstrating responsible use of the Yukon’s wildlife.

Jinx Ross Scholarship

For students who are studying in the human services field (e.g., rehabilitation, medicine) and who have resided continuously in Yukon for not less than two years immediately prior to the date of commencement of classes. Grade 12 candidates should have a minimum average of 65% on final exams. This award is based on volunteer work, community work and grades.

Knights of Columbus Scholarship of Bishop Coudert Council (No. 6232)

This scholarship is to be made available to all Yukon students who are entering further post-secondary school studies.

The scholarship shall be two bursaries of $300 given annually to suitable and qualifying candidates. All applications for the scholarship must be received on or before November 5 of the given year.

Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific

Yukon sponsors one student per year for a two-year period to attend Lester B. Pearson United World College in Victoria, British Columbia. Applicants should currently be in Grade 11 and will take Grades 12 and 13 at the College, culminating in the International Baccalaureate examination.

NELPco Scholarship for Yukon Engineering, Sciences, Natural Resources and/or Technology

Award amount

 Two (2) - $1000 scholarships annually

Criteria

  • Preferably a 2nd or beyond year student in engineering, science, natural resources or technology
  • Primary audience Na-cho Nyäk Dun citizens, a resident of Mayo or graduate of the high school in Mayo
  • if the first two categories cannot be filled, a citizen of another Yukon First Nation

Nicholas John Harach Scholarship

  • Yukon student who has completed two years of high school in the Yukon public school system
  • Has resided in Yukon for 12 consecutive months prior to start of studies
  • Aviation-oriented technical training

Northwestel Northern Futures Scholarship Program

Northwestel will provide six $4000 scholarships to northern residents across our operating territory. The awards are given to students attending post-secondary education in Commerce/Business, Engineering, Electrical/Telecommunications or Computer Sciences. Priority for three of the awards will go to Aboriginal students.

Ted Parnell Scholarship

The Yukon Conservation Society offers an annual scholarship of $500 to a student pursuing any aspect of environmental studies. This scholarship will be awarded to a student demonstrating outstanding interest and motivation in the environmental field. Interests pertaining to northern environments such as wildlife, ecology, renewable resources, energy and environmental education are appropriate areas for eligibility.

Applicants must be Yukon residents and should be entering or currently enrolled in a post-secondary school program (excluding graduate work).

In memory of Ed Chambers, a former Yukon Energy board member.
