Ben Sheardown Award for Coaching Excellence

Presented by: Yukon School’s Athletic Association, Yukon Department of Education and Yukon Teachers Association

General Information
The Ben Sheardown Award for Coaching Excellence is awarded annually to an individual who has been involved in coaching Yukon School Athletic teams.  A selection committee comprised of: a representative of the Yukon Schools Athletic Association, Yukon Teachers Association and the Department of Education will select one coach annually.

  • Coaching experience associated with community athletic teams will not be a determining factor in the recipient of this award.
  • Equal consideration will be given to those coaches who have coached a variety of sports as well as those who have dedicated themselves to a particular sport.
  • All unsuccessful nominations will remain active for the next nomination period.
  • A past award winner is not eligible for a second award.
  • Each nomination should have at least one sponsor; self - nominations will not be considered.

Nominations
Nominations will be accepted from colleagues, parents, school council members, or members of teams the candidate coached. Nominations shall be submitted to Paul MacDonald, Porter Creek Secondary school.  Please mark envelope “Attention Selection Committee for the Ben Sheardown Coaching Excellence Award”.
Nominations will be received until 5:00 P.M. on Monday, April 6, 2009.

Nomination packages should include:

  • Completed application form PDF File
  • Supporting letter from an individual who can attest to the candidates coaching skills, abilities and leadership.
  • Signature of person(s) sponsoring the nomination.

Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will possess:

  • Coaching skills, abilities and leadership qualities that demonstrate a commitment to coaching Yukon students on Yukon school athletic teams.
  • Extensive coaching experience and dedication to Yukon school athletic teams.
  • Coaching skills, abilities and leadership qualities that enable athletes to develop their physical, cognitive, and social skills to excel to higher levels of play.
  • An ability to motivate and encourage student athletes to exceed their own expectations.
  • An ability to model behaviors that demonstrate a commitment to other students on the team, sportsmanship, competitiveness, and fair play.
