Purpose

The purpose of the British Columbia Provincial Examination Program is to:

  • establish performance standards at the provincial level.
  • provide grade 10 and 12 students with the opportunity to demonstrate excellence.
  • promote accountability through data obtained from the provincial examinations and school marks.
    • ensure equity to students who plan to enter into post-secondary studies, or for employment purposes.
    • enable schools, school districts and the ministry to make informed decisions.

Provincial examinations are held annually in January, April, June, August and November. All grade 10 and 12 students in Yukon schools participate in at least one examination session per year, depending on their school's semester system.

Note:  Following the completion of school and community consultations, the Department has decided that Yukon will fully align itself with British Columbia graduation requirements. This change is retroactive to the January 2009 exam period.

Five British Columbia Provincial Exams remain mandatory. This includes Language Arts 10 and 12, Science 10, Mathematics 10 and Social Studies 11 (or equivalent). All other BC Provincial Exams will be optional, and parents and students are encouraged to contact their principal for more information.

In order to be eligible to write a Provincial Exam, a student must:

  • have completed the school course work, have successfully challenged the course, or have earned credit through equivalency.
  • have a final school percent reported by the school.
  • be enrolled in a Yukon public school, Distance Education Course, or be registered as a home schooler.
  • grade 10 students write Provincial Exams in English 10, Science 10 and Math 10, starting with the 2004-05 school year.

Tests Resources

Test specification documents are available to teachers early in the school year. These documents outline and describe the tests, the types of questions, and in addition, provide practice tests and questions to use with students to prepare them for the actual tests.

Results of the assessments are contained in the 2007 - 2008 Department of Education Annual Report pdf file.
