POLICY:

The Yukon Government is eligible to sponsor one Yukon student every other year to attend the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. A significant financial contribution from Yukon Government is required to support the student’s participation in the four year program; therefore, eligible students must meet one of the dependent, independent or new resident categories in Section 6 under the Act:

GUIDELINES:

Students who have been accepted into the Western College of Veterinary medicine must meet one of the following categories contained in Section 6 of the Act:

  • A Dependent Student: Less than 19 years of age on the day your post-secondary classes start, have at least parent residing in Yukon continuously for a period of 2 years immediately preceding the start of your post-secondary classes OR are 19 years of age and have resided in the Yukon continuously during the immediate preceding period of 1 year and have previously received Yukon Grant financial assistance as a dependent student.
  • An Independent Student: Completed any 2 years of secondary school, between Grades 8 and 12, in the Yukon school system (This can also include home schooling as long as the home schooling has been registered with the Department of Education) OR have previously received financial assistance as a dependent student defined above and have resided in the Yukon continuously for a period of 2 years immediately preceding the start of post-secondary classes. A person can qualify as an independent student no matter his or her age at the time of application.
  • A New Resident Student: less than 19 years of age on the day your post-secondary classes start, you and at least one of your parents have taken up residency in the Yukon, and you are a dependant of that parent at that time. You have completed 1 year of secondary school, between Grades 8 and 12, in the Yukon school system (This can also include home schooling as long as the home schooling has been registered with the Department of Education). Your parent(s) must reside in the Territory while you are attending post-secondary studies and you must complete your post-secondary education before you reach the age of 24.

If eligible, students may also access eligible funding under the Act to assist with the cost of their studies.

The Western College of Veterinary Medicine is responsible for selecting students for admission into the College. The Government of Yukon is responsible for selecting whether the student will be sponsored to attend the College according to the above criteria.

APPEALS:

The Students Financial Assistance Committee will hear all appeals that do not conform with this policy.
