Print Version: Valedictorian Policy ![]()
Date Passed: June 9, 2008
Purpose:
To require schools to provide specific details on how their valedictorian or student speaker is selected and the criteria for that selection.
To clearly outline the expectation of the valedictorian or student speaker from the time of selection to graduation.
To specify the process to revoke the appointment of valedictorian or student speaker should the need arise.
Definitions:
Valedictorian:
The valedictorian or student speaker is a title typically conferred upon a student within the graduating class of an educational institution. The student (s) can be chosen based on criteria defined by the school. Some schools may choose two students in lieu of conferring the title to a single individual from among the graduating class.
Standards and Procedures:
Each school must specify in writing the criteria by which they choose their school valedictorian(s) or student speaker(s).
Each school must post the criteria and the selection process in their school handbook and on the school website, so the Valedictorian selection process is clear and transparent.
The student (s) should be an exemplary representative of the student body.
Each school must also specify the process to revoke the appointment of valedictorian or student speaker should the need arise.
Application:
This policy applies to all Yukon schools that have a graduating class.
