POLICY:
The legislation states that the Officer may approve travel assistance for students who must travel outside of the Territory or outside their home community in order to attend classes. The intent of the travel subsidy is to assist students to travel to their institution, normally in the fall, and return to the Yukon or to their home community after classes have ended, normally in the spring. Due to the changing nature of periods of study, the timeframes for how often and when a student can receive an airfare/travel allowance have been clarified.
Further, the legislation states that an economy or other class of airfare for studies outside the Territory can be determined by the Officer; and for studies within the territory a travel allowance calculated at the current government rate per kilometer may be paid.
GUIDELINES:
Timeframes
Upon approval of Yukon Grant funding, a student must be present in the Territory or his/her home Yukon community any time prior to his/her classes commencing in order to be eligible for the airfare/travel portion.
Students are only eligible to receive one airfare/travel portion for their entire study period during the academic year for which they are enrolled and can only receive one airfare/ travel subsidy per calendar year.
Students who have been denied funding during their first term, because they missed the deadline date and would have been eligible for the travel portion will be eligible for the airfare/travel portion in their second term.
Amounts
Students attending an institution outside Yukon:
Travel Allowance:
If eligible, students may receive a travel allowance as follows:
Airfare:
