Department of Education supports:
The prohibition of tobacco use in accordance with the Smoke-Free Places Act and the Government of Yukon Smoke-Free Environment Policy, 3.50, General Administration Manual.
Promoting healthy lifestyles including the reduction and elimination of tobacco use.
Providing effective educational programs and positive role modeling for students about tobacco use.
Ensuring school administrators play an active role in advising students and teachers of the laws and policies regarding smoking.
Ensuring that schools establish polices regarding students leaving the school property during school hours.
Definitions
For purpose of this policy, "smoking" refers to all uses of tobacco including cigars, cigarettes, chewing tobacco and pipes and tobacco products.
Standards and Procedures
Smoking is not permitted in school buildings, facilities, on school grounds or in vehicles carrying students under the age of 19 for school sponsored events or on school grounds.
Staff, students and members of the public are expected to observe school rules regarding tobacco use at all times and to fully comply with this policy and all school rules as they relate to the rules of smoking.
The school rules will be included as a part of the package distributed to user groups wishing to use the school facilities after school hours.
The administrator may, at any time, initiate comprehensive smoking cessation programs in their school and may request assistance from the Department of Health and Social Services.
