Purpose and Principles

The Department of Education supports:

  1. Educational programs that promote physical wellness through outdoor activities.

  2. School and student preparedness to protect against injury.

  3. Student use of helmets in outdoor and winter activities as per the Canadian Medical Association’s endorsement of helmet use.

Guidelines and Procedures

  1. All Yukon public school students are required to wear helmets when engaging in the following school sponsored activities:

    1. alpine skiing;

    2. snowboarding;

    3. ice hockey;

    4. skateboarding;

    5. inline skating;

    6. speed skating;

    7. roller blading;

    8. ice skating

    9. mountain biking;

    10. road biking.

  2. Any agreement with a commercial service provider shall include a requirement to provide helmets for these activities.

  3. Administrators, at their discretion, may require that helmets be worn for any other school activity.
