The Department of Education supports:
Providing a residence for those Yukon students who cannot otherwise obtain senior secondary education within their home communities.
Establishing eligibility criteria for admittance and accommodation at Gadzoosdaa Student Residence recognizing that space at Gadzoosdaa Student Residence is limited to the number of rooms and beds available.
Standards and Procedures
Applicants to Gadzoosdaa Student Residence must be fulltime students entering grades 10, 11 or 12.
Applicants must be Yukon residents who reside outside the Whitehorse secondary schools catchment area.
At least one parent or legal guardian must continue to be a Yukon resident and reside outside the Whitehorse secondary schools catchment area.
Students with a custodial parent or legal guardian residing within the Whitehorse secondary school catchment area are not eligible for admission to the student residence.
Applicants must be eighteen years old or younger in the September they commence the school year.
Applicants will be considered for admission based on the following cascading priority and criteria:
Priority will be given to applicants from outside the Whitehorse secondary schools’ catchment area or from communities where there is no grade 10, 11 or 12 program offered and who wish to register as fulltime students at F.H. Collins Secondary School, Vanier Catholic Secondary School or Wood Street Centre and;
Students who intend to register at the commencement of the school year;
Students who intend to register at the commencement of the second semester;
Students from outside the Whitehorse secondary schools’ catchment area who are eligible to enrol as fulltime students, for either a full year or for a semester, in one of the shared programs at the Wood Street Centre;
Students from Atlin, British Columbia.
Students who are accepted into the residence and who are registered at F.H. Collins Secondary or Vanier Catholic Secondary are not required to submit subsequent applications provided that they continue to meet eligibility requirements.
New applicants may not displace students already resident and enrolled in a Whitehorse secondary school program.
Students from rural Yukon communities with senior secondary schools and who are enrolled in the Wood Street Centre are eligible for residence admission only for the duration of the program in which they are registered.
Principals of rural schools must provide written notification to the headmaster of Gadzoosdaa by 1st May each year regarding students who are eligible for admittance and who have expressed interest in a Whitehorse senior secondary program commencing the new school year.
Applications for admission to the first semester at F.H. Collins Secondary, Vanier Catholic Secondary or Wood Street Centre will be accepted between 1st May and 21st May. Applications received after 21st May will be considered, space permitting.
The headmaster of Gadzoosdaa will establish a waiting list based on the above criteria.
Students on the first semester waiting list will get first priority based on the above criteria.
The headmaster of Gadzoosdaa will compile a first semester eligibility list by 31st May each year from rural applicants throughout the Yukon and Atlin, British Columbia.
The headmaster of Gadzoosdaa will inform the students on the first semester eligibility list and their parents or guardians by 7thJune each year regarding acceptance into the residence and registration in a Whitehorse secondary school program for the first semester.
Principals of rural schools must provide written notification to the headmaster of Gadzoosdaa by 1st October each year regarding students who are eligible for admittance and who intend to register in a Whitehorse senior secondary program commencing the second semester.
Applications for admission to the second semester at F.H. Collins Secondary, Vanier Catholic Secondary or Wood Street Centre will be accepted between 1st October and 21st October. Applications received after 21st October will be considered, space permitting.
The headmaster of Gadzoosdaa will compile a second semester eligibility list by 31st October each year from rural applicants throughout the Yukon and Atlin, British Columbia.
The headmaster of Gadzoosdaa will inform the students on the second semester eligibility list and their parents or guardians by 7th November each year regarding acceptance into the residence and registration in a Whitehorse secondary school program for the second semester.
Fulltime students will be admitted to the residence at the beginning of each semester based on the above criteria and available space.
In the event there are more eligible applicants than beds available, applicants will be considered based on the above criteria and the date of the applications received for the first semester followed by the date of applications received for the second semester.
Gadzoosdaa residents must comply with the regulations and procedures outlined in the Gadzoosdaa Student Residence Handbook.
Boarding Allowance for Residents of Gadzoosdaa
As per Regulation 91/73, the Department of Education will provide the following boarding allowance to resident students:
An allowance of $270 for each calendar month that the school is in session.
This allowance will be paid per student providing that the student is in attendance at the school or at a school sponsored activity on those days when school is officially in session or has been officially excused by the school administration from attending.
Where students are absent, but not excused from school, the boarding allowance may be pro-rated.
The following fees are set for the Gadzoosdaa Residence:
A residence boarding fee of $380/month for each calendar month that school is in session.
All Yukon students residing in the Gadzoosdaa residence will be eligible for the boarding allowance.
