May 31, 2013 Grade 6 Late French Immersion Program

This program is available to all Whitehorse area students who will be entering Grade 6 in September.
The Late French Immersion curriculum is very similar to what is taught in Grade 6 English classes. It includes the same content areas in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, physical education, music and art, except that all subjects are taught in FRENCH. Language Arts in English is re-introduced in grade seven.

May 29, 2013 C.H.A.O.S. 9 & 10 registration deadline extended to June 5

C.H.A.O.S., meaning Community, Heritage, Adventure, Outdoors, Skills, is an experiential program offered out of the Wood Street Centre and is available out of the Wood Street Centre in Whitehorse. Registration is available to all Yukon students entering Grade 9 or 10 next year. To read more, click here.

May 9, 2013 Whitehorse teacher recognized for innovation in the classroom

 

Whitehorse Elementary School teacher Michel Emery has been selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator, making him the first teacher in northern Canada to receive the distinction.

The Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) Program began in 1994, when Apple recognized K-12 and higher education pioneers who are using a variety of Apple products to transform teaching and learning in powerful ways. Today it has grown into a worldwide community of over 2,000 visionary educators and innovative leaders who are doing amazing things with technology in and out of the classroom.

“Technology has always had an important place in my practice as a teacher” Emery said. “In the past 15 years in education, I have researched and applied different ways to empower and engage my students using various technologies and applications.”

Emery holds a Master of Education in Information Communication Technology and Learning from the University of Aberdeen and is involved in the Digital Literacy Working Group at Yukon Education.
This summer he will travel to Austin, Texas to join other educators at this year’s Apple Distinguished Educator Institute.

May 8, 2013 Congratulations to the F.H. Collins Gay Straight Alliance for being the 2013 CSSN/TD Award for Excellence Against LGBT Youth Bullying winner!

The group was nominated for their efforts on various projects throughout the year, most notably for the Ally Day event that they hosted this past Valentine’s Day. The F.H. Collins Gay Straight Alliance is the first Canadian GSA to exist north of 60°.

The group will receive the award while in Toronto attending the Gay Straight Alliance Summit later this month.
