Wildlife Technician Trainee (Johnny Charlie Scholarship)
Porcupine Caribou Management Board

This position will be based out of Dawson. Working together with the North Yukon Regional Biologist, the summer student will carry out regular monitoring work and assist researchers collaborating with the team (e.g., McGill and University of Montana University graduate students). At times the student will be required to work unsupervised in an office setting to achieve objectives set out by regional staff. Field work will always occur with regional staff or with other collaborators (e.g., Parks Branch, McGill). Travel to PCMB meetings will occur on the student's own but in collaboration with PCMB staff. In addition to potential annual monitoring of Porcupine Caribou, a wide variety a field work will be completed throughout the summer including monitoring of pita, sheep, waterfowl, and grouse. While attempts will be made to include summer students in as much fieldwork is possible, all fieldwork is tentative and scheduling will need to be flexible.

This position is located in Dawson city. Accommodations will not be provided and are the responsibility of the student.

Field of study:

The summer law student will perform various duties related to the general practice of law, including contacting legal research and preparing legal memorandum. The student will be encouraged to work directly with the lawyers on files, which may include attending client interviews and various court proceedings. The student will also be encouraged to attend case management conferences to watch the legal arguments on matters upon which they have worked.

Keish Camp Counsellor
Skookum Jim Friendship Centre

The Keish Camp counsellor position will work with SJFC’s recreation coordinator in planning, developing, and implementing the 2018 Keish Camps. Each week, a new group of 10 participants will take in activities in and around Whitehorse. Keish Camp Counsellors will be in charge of keeping direct supervision over participants while providing a safe and engaging camp environment. Keish Camp activities include trips to various local facilities to take part in physical activity and/or educational exhibits. Each week counsellors will develop rapport with new group of participants and will work towards creating a friendly interesting atmosphere so as to make all Keish Camp participants feel included throughout the week. At times, there will be facilitators who will come to Splintered Craft to put on workshops (e.g. traditional art, song, and dance) and counsellors will assist facilitators in ensuring participation. Counsellors will apply proper conflict resolution techniques learned in training when dealing with any disagreements between participants.

This includes lesson plans, scheduling of activities and staff. The programmer/leader will assist in purchasing and ordering of supplies and materials preparing space for each weekly camp.

During camps, the Leader will be responsible for instruction and supervision of children for both inside and outside activities and will provide guidance for teen assistant leaders. The Leader will ensure the Centre is open, clean and tidy in time to welcome campers and families each day. The leader will, under the guidance of arts professionals, plan and produce final camp performances and showing in "The Courts" blackbox theatre, create videos for sharing with participants and families, as well as gather feedback for evaluation and improvement of the program.
