Working in Yukon

Extending nominations and work permits

In some cases a nominee may require an extension of their nomination and/or an extension of their work permit.

The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) is responsible for issuing extensions for nominations, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) handles issuing extensions for work permits. To get an extension to a work permit, the nominee must have a valid nomination and hold a letter of support for am extension to their work permit.

Nominees are eligible for a one-time extension of their nomination. Please note that there is no guarantee that an extension will be issued.

We recommend that the nominee visits us at least 30 days prior to the expiry of their documents. YNP Officers need adequate time to process requests and issue letters.

The extension request is subject to all conditions that were in place at the time the original nomination certificate was issued.

Criteria for renewal:

  1. The nominee must demonstrate that they have undertaken the permanent residence process, and provide a copy of the application receipt for permanent residence.
  2. The nominee must write a letter to the Immigration officer indicating:
    a. The business at which they are employed;
    b. Their job title; and
    c. Reason for requesting the extension.
  3. The employer must write a letter indicating:
    a. The business name;
    b. The job title of the nominee; and
    c. The specific wage that is offered to the nominee.
    d. The willingness of the employer to continue to employ the nominee until the nominee receives permanent residency.
  4. The nominee must include a copy of theircurrent work permit.

***If the nominee is issued a letter of support for a new work permit, he/she must bring a copy of the work permit to Advanced Education.
