Substitute Teaching

The Yukon Department of Education is always interested in good substitute teachers. We want to hear from teachers with expertise in a variety of subject areas and from all Grade levels, K through 12.

Reapply Each Year

Please note that your employment as a substitute teacher is terminated at the end of each school year. You must reapply in order to be hired and have your name put on the substitute teacher list for subsequent school years.

Rate of Pay

Upon initial hire, you will be paid $107.96 per day as a Category 1 substitute. In order to qualify for a Category 2 substitute ($133.04 per day), you must hold a Bachelor's degree and provide this office with a copy of your transcripts showing the degree has been conferred. Your rate of pay will be raised effective the date we receive these documents in our office. In order to qualify for a Category 3 substitute ($173.47 per day), you must be eligible for a teaching certificate. You must provide this office with a copy of your Yukon Teaching Certificate, or, in the alternative, you may prove eligibility for same by providing this office with a valid teaching certificate from another jurisdiction, or a letter of eligibility for same, along with your transcripts. Your rate of pay will be raised effective the date we receive all of these documents in our office.

Former Yukon Students

If your leaving date from the last Yukon school you attended is within the last five (5) years, you must provide a written reference from the principal of that school, prior to being employed as a substitute teacher.

    Please note that this form has three pages. Please answer all questions, sign and date it.

  2. Consent for Disclosure pdf file

    This form authorizes the RCMP to conduct a search of criminal records.  Please fully complete this form by completing Part 1, signing in Part 4, initialling in Section 3, and completing and signing the reverse side of the form.  If any information requested does not apply to you, please write "Not Applicable" in that space.  You must personally take the completed form to the RCMP in your community to have the check completed.  Once the check has been completed you must retrieve the form from the RCMP and bring or send the original to Human Resources.

  3. Bank Payroll Authorization pdf file

    This allows for direct deposit of your pay into your bank account. You must attach a void cheque to this form in order for it to be processed.

  4. Federal Personal Tax Credits Return pdf file

    This form is required by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency in order to calculate the amount of federal income tax deducted from your pay. Please make sure that you sign and date the form.

  5. Yukon Personal Tax Credits Return pdf file

    This form is required by Yukon Territorial Government in order to calculate the amount of territorial income tax deducted from your pay. Please make sure that you sign and date the form.

  6. Substitute Personnel Regulation pdf file

    Please note Sections 5 and 6 of the Regulation, which deal with long-term Substitute Teaching assignments. You must complete ten (10) consecutive days in the same assignment and you must also work at least one (1) more consecutive day in order for these sections to come into effect.

  7. Certification of Teaching Experience pdf file

    In order for a qualified teacher to be paid correctly under Section 6 of the Substitute Teacher Regulations you will need verification of your teaching experience. These can be obtained from the jurisdiction(s) where you were previously employed as a teacher.
