Eligibility
To be eligible for a Yukon Professional Teaching Certificate, an applicant
• must be a person of good moral character, sound judgment and, in all respects, a fit and proper person to teach school students; and
• must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant or be otherwise qualified to meet the work requirements of a teaching contract in Yukon; and
• must hold a qualification document from another Canadian jurisdiction; and be in good standing with the regulatory authority that issued the qualification document; or have completed an approved bachelor of education degree at a university or college in Yukon or under the auspices of Yukon Education.
| A ‘qualification document’ means a certificate, licence, registration or other form of official recognition granted to an individual, which attests to the individual being qualified to teach in a school. |
Application Process
An applicant for a Yukon Professional Teaching Certificate, must provide
• a completed application form
• a copy of the qualification document being relied upon by the applicant
• a current statement of professional standing from the jurisdiction that issued the qualification document being relied upon by the applicant
• a current statement of professional standing from any other Canadian jurisdiction in which the applicant may have taught
• copy of most recent evaluation or, in the case of new teachers, copies of practice teaching reports
• written references from at least two referees respecting the applicant’s abilities and suitability for teaching
• in the case of an applicant who has completed their teacher training in Yukon, official transcripts of the applicant’s academic qualifications
An applicant may also be required to provide:
• a record of all prior experience as a teacher
• evidence of both oral and written proficiency in one of the two official languages of Canada
• a criminal record check
• any additional information the registrar may deem necessary to clarify or evaluate the documents submitted by or required of an applicant
Application for Yukon Teacher Certification
Restrictions or Conditions
The registrar may impose additional training, experience, examinations or assessments as a condition of issuing a professional certificate, where an applicant for a Professional Certificate has not been employed under the submitted qualification document within the period of two years immediately preceding the application.
If the qualification document held by an applicant contains a limitation, restriction or condition, the registrar may impose a similar or equivalent limitation, restriction or condition on the professional certificate; or may refuse to issue a professional certificate.
If the registrar considers it necessary to protect the public interest as a result of complaints or disciplinary or criminal proceedings in any other jurisdiction relating to the competency, conduct or character of a person who applies for a professional certificate, the registrar may impose any terms, conditions or restrictions; or may refuse to issue a professional certificate.
