Pupil-teacher ratios

Yukon enjoys one of the lowest and most favourable pupil-teacher ratios in the country. This is because schools need to be staffed based on programming requirements rather than on enrolment. Yukon teachers have an enviable opportunity to build relationships and make a difference in children's lives.

Teachers who wish to apply to teach in one of the Yukon's 28 schools must

  • hold or be eligible for certification in a Canadian province and
  • be eligible for Yukon certification

Pay and benefits

The Department of Education offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits. Pay is based on the following qualification:

  • years of post-secondary education
  • experience

Collective agreement

Yukon Education negotiates a Collective Agreement with the Yukon Teachers’ Association (YTA).

Professional development

The Department of Education and the Yukon Teachers' Association work together to provide professional development on an ongoing basis. Opportunities include

  • in-service training days
  • conferences
  • courses in Yukon and elsewhere
  • teaching exchanges to Australia
  • paid educational leave
  • Yukon Mentorship Program for Beginning Teachers
