Multi-Day Events

Carcross – Ghùch Tlâ Community School
Trivia Challenge
April 16 to 20
Trivia questions for each class throughout the week culminating in a Jeopardy-style contest on April 20. Teams will be comprised of students from each class.

Ukrainian Eggs
April 17 & 18: 6 to 8 p.m.
Miss Fitzpatrick will present a Ukrainian egg decorating workshop for all children accompanied by a parent.

First Nations Culture Week
April 16 to 20.
Events for the school community and invited guests. Activities include a winter camp, games, storytelling, traditional singing and dancing, sewing, crafts, cooking and a family feast.

You Make a Difference Campaign
F.H. Collins Secondary School, École Émilie-Tremblay, Porter Creek Secondary School and St. Elias Community School Be the Change teams: April 16 to 20.Students and staff want to appreciate people who make a difference in their lives and encourage those heroes to pay it forward. This is how it works: pick up free bracelets at the front desk of one of the participating schools. Give someone two bracelets, look them in the eyes and share how they make a difference in your life. Tell the person to keep one bracelet for themselves as a reminder that they are being the change they want to see in the world. Next, encourage them to pay forward this appreciation to someone else who is making a difference in their lives. On the inside of the bracelet is the Yukon Circle of Change’s website where you can blog your story of appreciation.

Radio Trivia: April 16 to 20.
Throughout Education Week listen for radio trivia on your local radio stations.
Skills Qualifiers Competition
April 16 to 20 in Trades Wing.
Yukon College students will be competing in a variety of skilled trade and technology disciplines. Apprentices and students will be vying for a spot on Team Yukon which will represent the territory at the 18th Annual National Canadian Skills Competition in Edmonton in May. Victors in Edmonton could qualify to represent Canada at the 42nd WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig, Germany in July 2013.

J.E.S. CARES Assembly

Kick off Education Week in style in our school gymnasium. All are welcome.
Art Gallery & Fancy Pants Day. All day.
The gym will be transformed into an art gallery featuring student artwork. Students are encouraged to dress in their ‘fancy’ clothes that day. Families and the community are welcome to come and view the display.

Students and community members are welcome to visit the school and learn more about iPads and Promethean Boards and how technology is used in the classroom. Ukrainian Eggs. Miss Fitzpatrick will be working with the Grade 5/6 class on this project throughout the afternoon.

CDC Library Open House

In-house library has a large selection of books for young children (infant to five years old) and parents. There will be refreshments and a book draw for the kids.

Christ the King Elementary School
Interactive whiteboard presentation
6 to 8 p.m.
Christ the King teacher Eric MacDonald will demonstrate how interactive whiteboards are used in Yukon learning environments. This public session will include examples of interactive lessons and exercises for parents and children to explore together. Come see how Promethean boards are being used in Yukon classrooms, and try one out for yourself!

Association Franco-Yukonnaise
Story time / Heure du conte
10 to 11:30 a.m. at 302 Strickland Street.
This event, based on our newest programme, Contes sur roues, is targeted at children aged 0 to 5 and their parents. Pierrette Taillefer, our raconteuse extraordinaire, will coordinate a one and a half hour session that will be of particular interest to bilingual families who are looking to encourage the use of French in the home. It will also be a great occasion to sign up for Contes sur roues or any of our spring session workshops. Visitors will be encouraged to stop by our Resource Centre to get acquainted with our film and CD lending library.

Thursday, April 19

Department of Education - Open House

4 to 6 p.m. at 1000 Lewes Blvd.
Everyone is welcome to learn more about the educational resources and opportunities available in Yukon. Come down and have your child participate in fun invention challenges to spark their interests in science, technology, engineering and math. Learn to juggle, solve puzzles and submit your completed Activity Passport for a chance to win prizes! Several of our community partners will be in on the fun with displays and activities too. There will be free refreshments and entertainment, as well as a display of student art from Golden Horn Elementary School.
