Plan for school

Attendance areas

Every Yukon school is located within an attendance area. Students are required to attend school in their attendance area.

Attendance areas are established by ministerial order under Section 58 of the Education Act. The attendance area is normally the local neighbourhood or community.

Attendance areas for Catholic schools and for special programs such as French Immersion differ from attendance areas for schools that offer regular educational programs. For example, the attendance areas for Vanier Catholic Secondary and École Whitehorse Elementary schools encompass all of Whitehorse. For the French-first-language schools, École Émilie-Tremblay and Académie Parhélie, the attendance area is all of Yukon.

Out-of-area attendance

In exceptional circumstances, students can apply to attend a school outside their attendance area. Visit our Transfer Schools page for more information.
