Funding for apprentices

Advanced Education offers support for in-class training, including:

Coursework
You do not have to pay tuition fees for your coursework.

Book allowance
You can apply for $200 for books for each in-class session.

Dependent care
If you have to pay for professional care costs for your children or dependants in order to attend training, you can apply for financial support.

Commuting allowance
You are provided with a commuting allowance of $20 per training week.

Travel support
If your course takes you away from home, you may apply for travel costs.

If flying, you are eligible to receive the actual cost of return airfare.
If you are driving, you are eligible to receive $.053 per kilometre and up to three overnight stays at $79 per night, each way. The number of overnights is determined by distance.

Living away from home (maintaining a second residence)
If you keep a permanent home AND pay for a second residence while on the course, you may apply for a Living Away from Home Allowance of

  • $200/week if the second home is in Yukon or
  • $170/week if the second home is outside Yukon

Weekly income support
You may qualify for Employment Insurance while you are away from work to take training.

Disability support
If you have a disability and need supports or accommodations to take a course, you may apply for additional funding. A disability may be any persistent physical, mental, psychiatric, sensory or learning impairment, etc. If you need to apply for disability related funding, please contact Advanced Education for further information and support.

When do I receive my payments?
It takes a number of weeks to process payments. Funding may not arrive until after your course is finished. Be sure to save enough money to travel to classes and to support yourself for the full length of your course.

Apprentices must pay for some costs, including

  • student association fees
  • material fees
  • expenses for required books above the $200 book allowance
