You are eligible to receive the Training Allowance if you have resided in the Yukon Territory for 24 months immediately prior to your classes commencing.
. If your completed application and required documents for Student Training Allowance are not received in our office within 14 school days after your classes start, you will only be considered for funding starting from the date your application and documents are received.
Once your application has been approved, a letter will be sent to you and the institution you are attending indicating how much you will be receiving.
Training Allowance rates are payable as follows:
| Student Only | $100 per week |
| Student and 1 dependant | $143 per week |
| Student and 2 dependants | $167 per week |
| Student and 3 dependants | $187 per week |
| Student and 4 dependants | $209 per week |
If you are required to travel to another community to attend a program not offered in your home community, you may receive:
All applications are assessed on a first-come, first-serve basis, so the earlier you get your application in, the earlier your money will reach the institution. Training Allowances are paid every two weeks.
For students attending Yukon College you can pick your cheques up at the bookstore. If you are attending a community campus, your cheques will be mailed to the campus.
For other institutions, your cheques are sent care of the financial aid office of the institution you are attending.
A student may receive assistant for the Student Training Allowance and Yukon Grant combined for up to a maximum of five years.
You will be issued a T4A for your Training Allowance. Each year Canada Revenue Agency issues “Pamphlet 105 Students and Income Tax” outlining entitlements and obligations under the Act. It is the student’s responsibility to determine the taxability of amounts received and to assess the facts of their situation. Please visit the section for students on the Canada Revenue Agency web site at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/.
If you have been overpaid, for any reason, you must pay back that portion of the Training Allowance, otherwise, no repayment is required.
There are Yukon residency requirements in Student Financial Assistance programs. Two strong indicators for being recognized as a Yukon resident for these programs are: holding a Yukon Health Care Card on a continuous basis for the period of time required immediately prior to the commencement of classes; and having been assessed as a Yukon tax payer on your income tax submission for the years prior to the start of your classes. If you have any questions about your Yukon resident status, please contact one of the Student Financial Services Officers.
Receiving student financial assistance, other than scholarships, in another province or territory will disqualify you from obtaining Yukon student financial assistance for that same period, and you will be required to repay any Yukon funding issued.
