Student Financial Assistance - SFA

To give yourself more options in today's workforce, education beyond high school is highly desirable. For the vast majority of Yukoners, electing to pursue your education beyond high school can be a very expensive decision - travel costs, tuition, books, and accommodation. Although you are primarily responsible for paying for your own education, this guide will assist you to access funds that may make it more affordable.

The Student Financial Assistance Unit has a variety of programs available to help you pay for post secondary education: Yukon Grant, Student Training Allowance, Yukon Excellence Awards, Canada Student Loans and Grants, and a variety of Scholarships.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
THE YUKON GRANT & STUDENT TRAINING ALLOWANCE?

The Yukon Grant is available for post-secondary studies within and outside of the Yukon while the Student Training Allowance is only valid for studies at Yukon College or an approved Human Resources Development (HRD) training program within the Yukon.

However, if you are studying at Yukon College or in Yukon in an approved HRD program, you may have the option of Training Allowance or Yukon Grant. Please read carefully to see which one would best suit your needs.

YUKON GRANT

STUDENT TRAINING ALLOWANCE

Eligibility:
-Post Secondary Studies at any designated institution.
-Enrolled full time as defined by the institution.
-At least 12 weeks long.

 

Eligibility:
-Enrolled at Yukon College or in an approved Human Resource and Development Training program in Yukon.
-Enrolled full time.
-At Least 3 weeks long to a max of 40 weeks per year

 

Residency Requirements
To qualify for Yukon Grant you must fit into one of the following categories:
1. Dependant Student
2. Independent Student
3. New Resident Student

Residency Requirements
-Must have resided in the Yukon Territory for 24 months immediately prior to your classes commencing.

 Disbursement
-Applications are processed on a 1st come 1st serve basis
-Sent by Quarter or Semester to Financial Aid Office of Institution.

Make sure you have filled out all sections of the appropriate application form. Complete it in pen (not pencil), and include the proper documentation. If you are not sure, please give us a call. If your application is incomplete it will delay the processing of your financial assistance or cause missed deadlines.
