First year applicants receive 100% of the Yukon Grant. You must maintain a 65% average to receive the full amount in the following year(s). If you obtain an average below 65% you will receive 60% of the Yukon Grant, until such time as your average is 65% or better.
If you are attending an institution outside the Yukon you may receive a travel subsidy. In order to receive subsequent travel subsidies you must have returned to the Yukon since your last subsidy and prior to a new academic year. If you are attending a program within Yukon, not available in your home community, you may receive a travel subsidy. Note: Travel subsidies are paid one per calendar year.
All applications are assessed on a first-come, first serve basis, so the earlier you get your application in, the earlier your money will reach the institution. Yukon Grants are disbursed by semester or quarter. For example, if you are attending 2 semesters, your first cheque would arrive in September and the following disbursement will be sent in January.
The money is sent in your name care of the financial aid office of the institution you are attending. Once the institution ensures you are registered full-time, they will give you the cheque. However, if you owe money for fees, room and board, etc., the institution may ask you to sign it over to them.
A student may receive assistance for the Yukon Grant and Student Training Allowance combined for up to a maximum of five years.
You will be issued a T4A for your Yukon Grant. Each year Canada revenue Agency issues "Pamphlet 105 Students and Income Tax" outlining entitlements and obligations under the Act. It is the student's responsibility to determine the taxability of amounts received and to assess the facts of their situation. Please visit the section for students on Canada Revenue Agency's web site:
If you withdraw from studies or change from full-time to part-time status, you will be required to pay back all or part of the Yukon Grant.
