How Do I Qualify For An Excellence Award?

All resident Yukon students who write semester-end or year-end Yukon Achievement Tests or B.C. Provincial Exams in a Yukon school are eligible for a Yukon Excellence Award. You must achieve a test score of 80% or higher on any of these exams.  Dependent students attending school outside of Yukon whose parent(s) reside in Yukon are also eligible if they receive a score of 80% or higher on a B.C. Provincial Exam.  The Department of Education will notify you if you earn an award.  You can redeem your Yukon Excellence Award when you attend post-secondary studies.

What Can I Use the Award For?

You may use your award towards the cost of tuition, compulsory fees, and/or books.

Are There Any Conditions To Be Met?

No.

How Do I Access My Yukon Excellence Award?

  • By completing and submitting the Yukon Student Financial Assistance Application Form pdf file - Sections 1, 2, 3 and 7, plus your itemized receipts for tuition, compulsory fees and/or books.
    This form is provided on-line in PDF format. Help on viewing PDF files is available. Paper forms are available from our office.
  • Online applications:  Complete online and submit separately signed Student Declaration and your itemized receipts for tuition, compulsory fees and/or books

Is There A Deadline Date For Applications?

You may apply at anytime during the school year to access your awards.  You must redeem your awards within 10 years after leaving high school.

How Do I Find Out If My Yukon Excellence Award Application Is Approved?

Once your application has been approved, a letter will be sent to you and the institution you are attending indicating how much you will be receiving.

How Much Will I Receive?

Grade 9 Yukon Achievement Tests - $200
Math and Language Arts

Grade 10 BC Provincial Exams - $300
Math, Science and Language Arts

Grade 11 BC Provincial Exams - $400
Social Studies and Civics 11

Grade 12 BC Provincial Exams - $500
Any grade 12 Provincial Exam, there are about a dozen 

The amount paid will not be greater than the total value of the awards you have earned. Any unused portion can be used in future years.

When Will I Get My Money?

All completed applications are assessed on a first-come, first-serve basis, so the earlier you get your application in, the earlier you will receive your money.

Where Is My Money Sent?

The money is sent care of the financial aid office of the institution you are attending.

Do I Pay Income Tax On My Yukon Excellence Awards?

If you are eligibile to claim the education amount, you are no longer required to report your Yukon Excellence Awards as income.  If you are not eligible for the education amount you must claim the Yukon Excellence Awards amount as income, less $500.  Please keep us informed of your permanent home address as T4A forms are still required.  For information on education deductions for income tax purposes, please visit the section for students on the Canada Revenue Agency web site at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/.

Do The Awards Have To Be Paid Back?

No, once the awards have been issued, you will not be required to pay back any of the money you were eligible to receive.
